About Us

Probably shouldn’t start my new blog on a downer note, but I promise, the news gets better! I’m sure most of you have heard about the problems the honey bees are experiencing these days. Parasites, diseases, over-work and pesticides are killing them by the millions, and we’ve all been frightened into believing that “1/3 of our food crops will disappear” if the honey bees can’t pollinate. But guess what? It’s not true! There are more than 4,000 species of native North American solitary bees, and they successfully pollinated our continent for millions of years before the English colonists imported the European honey bee.So my mission is to let people know that there IS an alternative to honey bee pollination, and this blog and web site will tell you how you can help increase their populations in order to fill the honey bee gap.

Wondering if those are bees or flies on your flowers?

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether the insects you're seeing on your blooms are bees, wasps or flies. One quick way to tell the difference is that bees and wasps at rest fold their wings close to their bodies, while flies hold theirs in a V-shape, like a stealth bomber. Also, bees and wasps have two sets of wings (flies have one); and bees and wasps have antennae (flies - nope.)

Mulch Madness!

70% of solitary native bees are ground nesters, including the bumblebee, but crawling through inches of mulch (not to mention plastic) when you're only 1/2" long is pretty much impossible. So remove that mulch from some of your flower beds so these terrific pollinators can burrow and reproduce. You'll have free pollination all summer long.
