Did she say Pollen?
Yup, I say pollen can be an amazingly interesting thing, not to mention stunningly gorgeous (and no, I have not been drinking).I finally got to read the February issue of National Geographic and the awesome article by Rob Dunn and Martin Oeggerli entitled Love is in the Air. Trust me on this - it is so interesting and the images from a scanning electron microscope of different grains of pollen are so beautiful, you won't be able to put it down! Check it out.
Geranium PollenThis photo shows yellow grains of pollen on the stigma of a Geranium flower.
Pine PollenAnd this one shows Pine pollen, which coats your car with that yellow dust each spring and makes allergy sufferers miserable. Who'd have thought it would be so attractive?

Mulch Madness!
70% of solitary native bees are ground nesters, including the bumblebee, but crawling through inches of mulch (not to mention plastic) when you're only 1/2" long is pretty much impossible. So remove that mulch from some of your flower beds so these terrific pollinators can burrow and reproduce. You'll have free pollination all summer long.
